Digha known as one of the widest beaches all over the world is a seaside resort town in the state of West Bengal, India. At the northern end of the Bay of Bengal, Digha lies in Purba Medinipur district. It is located 187km southwest of Kolkata. The place is very pleasant in almost all seasons due to the softness of the sand. The pleasant time to visit Digha is October, November, December, January and February as you will witness cool breeze and less humidity. Summers in Digha is too hot and humid which is not at all ideal for the tourist to visit and relax . Monsoon hits the town July onwards bringing relief from soaring temperature. Maritime moderate weather is experienced in the months of March, April, May and June. One can enjoy several delicacies like fresh crab, lobster and varieties of fish being cooked and grilled over charcoal. Few beaches can be explored by hiring bikes. There are uncountable hotels and lodges of different fares to entertain the tourists in this beautiful place. Of late, there are a number of tourist spots apart from the sea beach.

Historical Importance

Digha was originally known as Beerkul during the time of Warren Hastings and was discovered in the late 18th century by the British. It was mentioned as the “Brighton of the East” in one of the letters of Warren Hastings, the then Governor General of India in 1780 mentioned to his wife. In 1923, an English tourist, John Frank Smith was charmed by the beauty of Digha and started living there. His writings gave exposure of this place. After independence, he convinced Dr. Bidhan Chandra Ray to develop Digha as a beach resortGradually, it became a tourist spot for local people and at this point of time it is one of the most visited places in West Bengal.
